A great who done it。 Kept me wondering right up until the end

I honestly don't even know where to start。。。。。。 In reading the premise on the book jacket I thought the story sounded compelling, a twisty dark psychological read。 Nope。。。。 for me I slogged through this - honestly I should have DNF'd it (again book guilt)。 The story is implausible。 The writing protracted。 The last 5 or so chapters I flashed back to my youth and felt like I was reading a Nancy Drew book。 Elin Warner = Nancy Drew。 I honestly don't even know where to start。。。。。。 In reading the premise on the book jacket I thought the story sounded compelling, a twisty dark psychological read。 Nope。。。。 for me I slogged through this - honestly I should have DNF'd it (again book guilt)。 The story is implausible。 The writing protracted。 The last 5 or so chapters I flashed back to my youth and felt like I was reading a Nancy Drew book。 Elin Warner = Nancy Drew。 。。。more

So much suspense COULD have built up because of the setting (killer on the loose in a snowed-in hotel), but the sense of dread wasn't there。 I'm all for a flawed protagonist, but Elin was incredibly frustrating。 Also the "clues" felt like something out of a campy Nancy Drew game。 It was trying to be realistic, and either needed to lean into that more。。。or go for full on camp。 Instead it straddled this odd middle ground that just wasn't fun。 So much suspense COULD have built up because of the setting (killer on the loose in a snowed-in hotel), but the sense of dread wasn't there。 I'm all for a flawed protagonist, but Elin was incredibly frustrating。 Also the "clues" felt like something out of a campy Nancy Drew game。 It was trying to be realistic, and either needed to lean into that more。。。or go for full on camp。 Instead it straddled this odd middle ground that just wasn't fun。 。。。more

Didn’t quiet live up to the hypeThe main character takes up a lot of real estate in this book and while that’s to be expected most of it seems irrelevant

The writing was good but I feel like the plot was lacking。 The constant switching of suspects, the reveal that Elin watched Sam die and didn’t help, the killer reveal, and the sanatorium aspect fell short for me。 There was a web of people involved and I felt like the author made it too complicated。 I feel like it would have been more effective to have one or maybe two possible suspects instead of everyone being involved。 The twist was expected in that I kind of I wanted to love this book SO BAD! I cannot believe I read this。 It was terrible and unbelievable。 It is day five of a terrible snowstorm but yet the outdoor pool cover is retracted。 What??? Nothing really came together。 We know that the murders were somehow related to the sanatorium angle, etc。, etc。 Would not recommend and will not read any sequels。

Matthew

Fun read, had some spots where the realism seemed missing。 The mystery throughout was very enjoyable。

Denise

It started out with promise, but ended up being very contrived and forced。 2。5 stars。

A slow burner for sure but the middle to end are amazing。 Not what I was expecting at all。

What the heck did I just read? The detective, who is the main character, did not behave like a normal detective would。 You shouldn't go off alone with potential suspects or tell any of them any information that may be related to the case。 The ending (with no spoilers) just seemed to be randomly added onto end。 The premise was there, but it soon became to over the top and somewhat unbelievable。 Not for me, thank goodness I got this out of the library。 What the heck did I just read? 3。5 for this thriller from me。 Set in hotel, once a sanatorium, where questionable things happened, Elin and her boyfriend plan to celebrate her estranged brother's engagement。 After not being there long, the weather prevents people from leaving or arriving, and a dead body is found。 Elin, a detective out on leave, jumps right in, trying to figure out what is going on。 All of the characters are unreliable and havea means for killing。 You'll go back and forth trying to figure it out。 There were s 3。5 for this thriller from me。 Set in hotel, once a sanatorium, where questionable things happened, Elin and her boyfriend plan to celebrate her estranged brother's engagement。 After not being there long, the weather prevents people from leaving or arriving, and a dead body is found。 Elin, a detective out on leave, jumps right in, trying to figure out what is going on。 All of the characters are unreliable and havea means for killing。 You'll go back and forth trying to figure it out。 There were some very graphic descriptions, so be aware if you choose to pick it up。 The Epilogue was my favorite part。 。。。more

It starts out great。 55 chapters in I found I had to skip to the end。 They built the plot too long and the story could have been concluded in the middle of the book。 200 pages too long。

I really enjoyed this book。 Awesome setting。 It reminded me of a lot of horror videogames which I love! I liked the lead character, even more as the story went on。

My first 5★ read of the year!! It took about a quarter of the book to hook me, but my interest grew, and by halfway through I realised that I really wanted to find out what was happening in the old sanatorium!! No one else saw this? I would also murder my rapist but the rest of her “why” seemed not well thought out。 3。 I hate when the bad guy confesses everything they’ve done in the last few minutes。 I get it’s to move the story forward and wrap it up but I find it really cheesy。 4。 That cliffhanger。 I didn’t love it。 I guess it leaves it open for a second novel which would be great for the author so kudos to her, but I don’t love thinking we solved everything only to have another book with essentially the same premise and same characters。 If it was a continuation of this story like Harry Potter is that’s one thing。 But we essentially defeated the bad guy, left the hotel and made up with our brother。 Now we have another novel of the same thing potentially coming? No thank you。Despite that I did really love this book。 It really was the ending that prevented me from giving it a 5 but this book was definitely worth the ride! 。。。more

The setting of the story is nice, the concept is very good, the narration is great, but I didn’t feel any connection to the main character, it is hard to care for her, and honestly she seemed a little bad at being a detective。 Will be reading the next book。Overall it was a nice read, with some gripping parts, 3。5 stars。

This book had a lot of my favorite element: lots of windows in the setting (imagining looking out of a window and finding a face on the other side when there shouldn’t be scares the shit out of me), medical horror, psychological issues, etc。 But for some reason it just wasn’t working for me。 I wasn’t ever thrilled the way I should have been。 I wonder if part of it is because through at least the first half our narrator is very unreliable (PTSD, paranoia, and lots of sleep deprivation)。 I will gi This book had a lot of my favorite element: lots of windows in the setting (imagining looking out of a window and finding a face on the other side when there shouldn’t be scares the shit out of me), medical horror, psychological issues, etc。 But for some reason it just wasn’t working for me。 I wasn’t ever thrilled the way I should have been。 I wonder if part of it is because through at least the first half our narrator is very unreliable (PTSD, paranoia, and lots of sleep deprivation)。 I will give it to the author that I didn’t see the twists coming (at least not until right before they were revealed anyway)。 Petty side note: the way the author spelled some of the characters’ names (Elin and Laure in particular) just bugged me so much。 I don’t know if it’s a European thing or just a millennial thing, but giving a character’s name a “unique” spelling just annoyed me (that, and I was never able to figure out whether Laure is supposed to be pronounced like Laura or Laurie)。 。。。more
